Monday via tweet President Trump announced that he was “pleased to inform” us, that on Tuesday at 9 p.m. eastern he would “Address the Nation on the Humanitarian and National Security crisis on our Southern Border”
The address comes as the Government remains partially shutdown as the Republicans and Democrats fail to reach an agreement on funding President Trump’s Southern Border Wall.
What we might expect to hear tonight regarding border security:
The lie – misstatement that 4,000 terrorist cross our southern border a year.
This figure was first floated by Department of Homeland Security in a presentation to Congress, a number that Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders repeated during an interview with Fox News reporter Chris Wallace. Wallace explained that according to the State Department that figure was not accurate stating that most suspected terrorists are apprehended at airports.
NBC News reported on Monday that the correct total of suspected terrorists crossing the Southern border is 6.
According to the article, “U.S. Customs and Border Protection encountered only six immigrants at ports of entry on the U.S-Mexico border in the first half of fiscal year 2018 whose names were on a federal government list of known or suspected terrorists, according to CBP data provided to Congress in May 2018 and obtained by NBC News.”
The Hill reports that Counsel to the President Kellyanne Conway told Fox News show host Laura Ingraham, that Sanders simple misspoke, “That was an unfortunate misstatement and everybody makes mistakes, all of us.”
According to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, “the threat is real,” she wrote on Twitter, but added, “the exact number is sensitive and details about these cases are extremely sensitive”
The lie – misstatement that 6,000 gang members including MS-13 members were stopped at the border in 2018.
National Correspondent for the Washington Post Philip Bump explains via tweet, that according to data submitted to Congress the number of gang members detained at the border is 800.
It is possible that President Trump during his address will announce his intention to pull the trigger and use the Emergency Powers Act, in order to build the wall without Congressional approval.
According to The New York Times, “administration officials who had seen a draft copy of his speech said the president was not preparing to do so.”
Based on past performance the address that according to many media sources is expected to last eight minutes, it’s really anybodies guess as to what we hear when President Trump addresses the nation for the first time from the Oval Office.
For What’s It’s worth: Here are some Twitter users preparing to live tweet fact-check while the President speaks.
Daniel Dale a Toronto Star reporter typical fact checks as President Trump speaks. He has made no formal statement that he intends to “live fact” tonight’s address he did suggest a person to follow on Twitter, that covers the border.
