Economic Tweets

From Thursday…

The video clip is 1 minute and 45 seconds long.

Brandon Moore: (snips from his introduction of President Biden as part of the Investing in America tour): I’m Brandon Moore. I was born and raised in Minneapolis. Many of you know me as the training lead here at Cummins. And today, I am proud to represent over 1,000 people that work this facility. We manufacture generators that power everything from recreational vehicles to generators that power data centers. I love working here and I love being a part of an innovative company and a diverse team that builds things that have an impact on people’s lives.

[29 second mark the clip cuts away to Moore’s conversation with President Biden]

Brandon Moore: Before I got to Cummins, I was like going job to job. It was like hard to find a job. So like every like six, seven months, I was switching jobs. But then, like, when I got here–

President Biden: How’d you get here? I mean, did someone say you ought to–

Brandon Moore: So, my friend actually told me I should come here. So then I did it, and I actually got hired on in two months. I like working with my hands, so bouncing job to job before, like I was doing wasn’t something I was interested in. So when I finally got into this building, it actually like opened up a broader job for me.

[1 minute and 2 second mark the clip cuts away to President Biden’s remarks]

President Biden:

A word my dad most often used is: Every worker deserves to be treated with dignity — with dignity.  And there are families looking for that as well.

[snip]

All these investments mean that now, if you’re — if you grow up in Minnesota or you go to a school in Minnesota, you can stay in Minnesota.  The we- — the Midwest is coming back screaming.  Good jobs you can raise a family on.  You don’t have to hear your son or daughter say, “Mom, I love it here, but there’s no work for me.  I got to leave.”

None of this is happening by accident.  It’s not just happening in Minnesota.  It’s all part of my agenda to invest in America: American jobs, American innovation, pride in our country

[snip]

We’re going to turn that around.  We’re proving it’s never been a good bet to be- — a good bet to bet against America.  I’ve never been more optimistic — and I mean this from the bottom of my heart — I’ve never been more optimistic about the future of our country.

From Friday…

His full statement on March’s Jobs Report:

This is a good jobs report for hard-working Americans. Today’s report shows that we continue to face economic challenges from a position of strength, with the economy adding 236,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate at 3.5%. My economic agenda has powered an historic economic recovery. We’ve created 12.6 million jobs since I took office. The unemployment rate is close to the lowest it has been in more than 50 years and a record low for African Americans. Thanks to the policies we have put in place, the recovery is creating good jobs that you can raise a family on, which is pulling more Americans into the labor force. In fact, the share of working age Americans in the labor force is at a 15 year high.

But there is more work to do. My Administration is working each day to lower costs for families and to make our economy even stronger, now and for the long term, with investments in infrastructure, innovation, and clean energy. Just this week, because of my agenda, companies announced new manufacturing investments in Georgia, New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. My Investing in America agenda is building an economy that benefits hard-working Americans in every community across the country, not just those at the top.

Extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress, on the other hand, are threatening to wreak havoc on our economy with debt limit brinkmanship. Their extreme agenda would send the unprecedented investments we’ve made here in America – along with the jobs that come with it – overseas. And it’s all to pay for even more giveaways to the wealthiest Americans and largest corporations. Make no mistake, I will stop those efforts to put our economy at risk and take us back to the failed policies of the past.

The Jobs Report says: Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 236,000 in March, and the unemployment rate changed little at 3.5 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Employment continued to trend up in leisure and hospitality, government, professional and business services, and health care.

Ben Casselman says:

He got the months mixed up in his revision tweet;

Jobs Report says; The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for January was revised down by 32,000, from +504,000 to +472,000, and the change for February was revised up by 15,000, from +311,000 to +326,000. With these revisions, employment in January and February combined is 17,000 lower than previously reported. (Monthly revisions result from additional reports received from businesses and government agencies since the last published estimates and from the recalculation of seasonal factors.)

Water Tweets

From Thursday…

From the White House; Message to the House of Representatives — President’s Veto of H.J. Res 27

TO THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES:

I am returning herewith without my approval H.J. Res. 27, a resolution that would disapprove the revised definition of “Waters of the United States”.

The 2023 revised definition of “Waters of the United States” carefully sets the bounds for which bodies of water are protected under the Clean Water Act.  It provides clear rules of the road that will help advance infrastructure projects, economic investments, and agricultural activities — all while protecting water quality and public health.

The resolution would leave Americans without a clear definition of “Waters of the United States”.  The increased uncertainty caused by H.J. Res. 27 would threaten economic growth, including for agriculture, local economies, and downstream communities.  Farmers would be left wondering whether artificially irrigated areas remain excluded or not.  Construction crews would be left wondering whether their waterfilled gravel pits remain excluded or not.  The resolution would also negatively affect tens of millions of United States households that depend on healthy wetlands and streams.

Therefore, I am vetoing this resolution.

White House.gov. 04/06/2023.

H.J.Res.27 – Providing for congressional disapproval under chapter 8 of title 5, United States Code, of the rule submitted by the Department of the Army, Corps of Engineers, Department of Defense and the Environmental Protection Agency relating to “Revised Definition of ‘Waters of the United States'”.

Summary:

This joint resolution nullifies the rule titled Revised Definition of “Waters of the United States,” which was submitted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Environmental Protection Agency on January 18, 2023. The rule specifies which bodies of water fall under the scope of the Clean Water Act and are thereby under federal jurisdiction and protected. For example, the definition in the 2023 rule includes certain wetlands and ephemeral waters (e.g., waters that flow intermittently).

The 2023 rule replaced the 2020 Navigable Waters Protection Rule that included a narrower definition of waters of the United States.

Gun Tweets

From Thursday…

I can’t cover this very objectively. So, here are my two cents.

Tennessee lawmakers, yesterday, expelled two elected Rep’s., Justin Jones, and Justin Pearson. A third Rep., Gloria Johnson barely escaped also being expelled from her seat by one vote.

Their sins were breaking House rules.

I listened to the majority of the session and this is how the R’s sounded to me…

President Biden’s full statement:

Last week, three more students and three school officials were gunned down in yet another tragic mass shooting in Nashville. On Monday, 7,000 Tennesseans, many of them students, marched to their state capitol to call on their lawmakers to take action and keep them safe.

Instead, state Republican lawmakers called votes today to expel three Democratic legislators who stood in solidarity with students and families and helped lift their voices. Today’s expulsion of lawmakers who engaged in peaceful protest is shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent. Rather than debating the merits of the issue, these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly-elected representatives of the people of Tennessee.

A strong majority of Americans want lawmakers to act on commonsense gun safety reforms that we know will save lives. But instead, we’ve continued to see Republican officials across America double down on dangerous bills that make our schools, places of worship, and communities less safe. Our kids continue to pay the price.

Congress must ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, require safe storage of firearms, eliminate gun manufacturers’ immunity from liability, and require background checks for all gun sales, and state officials must do the same.

White House.gov. 04/06/2023.

Former President Obama said:

You can disagree that the government needs to pass more gun laws, that’s fine, but what happened yesterday in TN., is how wannabe fascists react when their positions are threatened.
